Vegan Eats | Pumpkin Spice Latte!

psltitle

The season of novelty hot beverages is well and truly upon us, and is here to stay for quite some time. Between the red cups of that high street coffee giant and the bizarre concoctions on offer everywhere in between, flavoured drinks are big business and, if you’re vegan, you’ll know it can be hard to get in on the fun.

Why? Well, because there are hidden animal ingredients in so many seemingly vegan-friendly food items. Don’t ask me why, but for some reason the mixture used by Starbucks in Pumpkin Spice Lattes contains condensed milk, and is therefore not suitable for those adhering to a vegan diet. Of course, some people avoid Starbucks for other reasons, too, which is why today’s post is all about making the famous Pumpkin Spice Latte in the comfort and ethical safety of your own home – yay!

I have a confession to make: I’m not actually that big a fan of pumpkin. It’s not something I eat very often at all and I find it quite rich in taste. That being said, I really wanted to see what all the fuss was about in combining the Autumnal flavour of pumpkin with a good ol’ cup o’ joe, so I got to work on this very simple recipe to make my own vegan-friendly version of the drink.

The result is a warming, comforting and not overbearingly-pumpkiny hug in a mug which can be enjoyed with a plate of cookies which I absolutely recommend that you dunk. From what I know, you can pick up the pumpkin spice mix pre-made if you want to save time, and can add any garnishes you’d like such as whipped coconut cream, vegan marshmallows and cinnamon sticks.

As this was my first time trying this recipe out, I kept things simple by brewing a strong pot of coffee to start with – it’s important to make quite a strong pot as you’ll be adding non-dairy milk to it after. I used cloves and cinnamon as my spices of choice, and oat milk to keep the flavour of the milk neutral. You could also make an iced version of this drink, and save some in the fridge.

If you have your own vegan-friendly recipe for a killer Pumpkin Spice Latte, or if you decide to try this one out, let me know!
