Until around a year ago, primer was one of those products I didn’t really get. It just felt like another cream to slather onto my face, another way for the beauty industry to make a buck. Then I discovered its ability to make everything feel smoother and stay in place better, and I haven’t looked back since. Primer has gone from a skipped step in my routine to something I won’t leave out of my makeup look. Who knew?
I’ve tried a few different products and have found the following three to be my faves:
How do I love thee, Illamasqua? I won’t bore you all again by expressing my devotion to this product, but it really is among my favourites. Cruelty-free and vegan, the Hydra Veil is like glossing your face with cool, watery gel; it’s not greasy or heavy, but instead soaks into skin within moments.
I was kindly sent a sample of Arbonne’s Makeup Primer, and having tried it out I can safely say it has gone straight onto my Christmas wishlist. Before I became cruelty-free, the best primer I’d tried was Benefit’s Porefessional. This product has a similar consistency and finish, leaving my skin feeling incredibly soft, and visibly minimizing my pores. Arbonne’s credentials are basically flawless; vegan and paraben-free to name two. You can shop their range of premium skin care and cosmetics through an independent consultant.
Yes, I’m cheating here a little. This is not, strictly speaking, a primer. Though I initially fell for the adorable packaging and cute pearls (they saw me coming, as my mother would say) I soon realised just how well this product works as a base for my foundation. Over a good moisturiser, this highlighter – which I put all over my face as a primer, though you can just add it to your cheekbones and nose – provides a dewy sheen. Vegan, cruelty-free and available at your local Superdrug!
